Thor Halvorssen is not your average, privalaged human rights crusader. Instead he is driven by a backgound filled with human rights injustices and a desire to right the wrongs that he has seen and to make up for those he was powerless to stop. Raised in Venezuala, a country plaueged by an unstable government, to a Venezulan mother and a Swiss father, Halversson works tirelessly everyday to make the world a better place.
According to an article from Huffington Post, Thor Halvorssen began the Human Rights Foundation with a lofty goal, to rid the world of any and all human rights violations. He has since made some major inroads and accomplishments due to his fierce dedication and inability to give up or give in. His colleagues say that he works tirelessly going to sleep late and getting up early. He is also known for doing whatever it takes to get the job done and his message heard.
Halvorssen’s willingness to work hard and not let any obstacles get in the way was particularly evident on a trip to Ho Chi Minh City. He and a cameraman were busy interviewing the leader of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, Thich Quang Do. This banned church is under intense scutiny and he was dentained on his way out of the monestry where the authorites tried to use him as a punching bag. The cameraman’s equipment was destroyed but he was able to sneak out with the footage. Halvorssen was only able to leave when some quick thinking helped him convince the authorties he was a Buddhist seeker and not a human rights activist and filmmaker.
It is actions like this that make Thor Halvorssen such a formidable opponent. His strict dedication to his cause, which is fueled by the insjustices he witnessed as a child and a young man are only a part of the story. His hard work and dedication make up the rest. It is this, along with his inablity to comprimise that worries his next target, Kim Jong Il, the notorious tyrannical dictator of North Korea. Halvorssen and his team are well equiped to take on such a terrible power.
