According to an article published in The New York Times, billionaire George Soros and other liberal donors are expected to bankroll another $15 million campaign aimed at mobilizing Latinos and other immigrants. The strategists that are involved have put it that the new spending would turn out to be the largest voter-turnout effort devoted exclusively to immigrants and Latino voters. The money is expected to be spent in organizations in Nevada, Florida and Colorado as they are the states with a high or growing number of Asian and Latino populations. Voters from these groups are expected to be very pivotal in the battle to control senate and the presidential race.
The outreach will be coordinated through the Immigrant Voters Win PAC. According to the strategists, the PAC is expected to be explicitly partisan and political than the past efforts. The aim is not just to turn the already voting Latinos to support Democratic, but to also find and persuade swing voters from the immigrants group. The organizers are targeting at least 400,000 new voters to vote for Democratic in the November polls.
These efforts are coming up amid signs of an enthusiasm gap that has left some of the leading strategists of the Democratic Party worried. Whereas the Republican voters are turning out in hordes, to vote for Trump, Democratic voters are still yet to settle out between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.
Democrats are confronting the lingering disappointment among pockets of Latinos regarding President Obama, as he did not deliver as per expectations on the issue of immigrants. At the same time, the conservatives are investing heavily to woo Hispanic voters. The Libre Initiative, which is financed by Koch brothers, is expected to use more than $10 million by November and it already has a couple of field organizers in about nine states.
Both campaigns are coming out against a demographic swell that is reordering the presidential politics of US. Mr. George Soros effort, contribution of $5 million to PAC, represents a return to the large scale political spending, which made him conservative boogeyman and a liberal hero.
The intense anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric, which has been fueled by Trump, has been criticized by Soros. Mr. Soros has found the remarks offensive and harmful to democracy and the national interests.
